Two shows coming up after our Summer break!
The first is a new venue near Hull, namely North Ferriby Village Hall where we have been asked to play by a local promoter who saw us at Tribfest last year. Tickets are going well and we are looking forward to seeing some of the folk who supported us at Tribfest over the last three years there. We decided to have a break from Tribfest this year but we will be returning in 2016. See our EventBrite page for tickets.
The second is a welcome return to a great venue on the Flyde coast namely Thornton Little Theatre. We sold the venue out last time and advance ticket sales are up on last year already so please book now to avoid missing out. This is a great venue with a superb atmosphere. Tickets are available on our Thornton EventBrite booking page.
The Brindley Rocks!
Just have to write a few words about the show at The Brindley in Runcorn, which was one of the best venues we have ever appeared at. Great 400 seater which we 3/4 filled. We (and the promoter) were very happy with that for a first time visit. We have already been booked back for two nights in 2016 and one of these will be our new Genesis Hits show. We did preview that show with a version of Sledgehammer which went down a storm. Considering we had only played it once in rehearsal that was quite a result!
People have asked us about the Genesis Hits show so let us clarify what it is and why we doing it. We realised that as we play longer pieces such as the Duke Suite and Home By The Sea, we missed playing some of the shorter songs we used to play. The idea was born to produce a show were we could play a set of more progressive, longer Genesis songs one night and a set of Hits by Genesis, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and Mike & The Mechanics the next night. We are going to do this in selected venues in 2016 as well as Kinross this year. Some folk will come both nights and some will pick a night that suits them, which is of course fine.
Also we now have not only a CD on our merchandise stall but some jazzy new T-shirts with an exclusive Genesis design by our very own Mark on guitars.
Dave’s Tour Log Episode 5: TRIBUTE WARS
Episode 5: The Empire Strikes First
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away….
Late into the night the hedgehog looked up from the middle of the road to see the pattern of stars in the sky. A roaring sound came from behind it, followed by a woosh as a huge white object flashed across the sky above. It was the last thing the hedgehog saw as it was squashed by the white van. Mama, the UK’s all era Genesis tribute band to perform their 2014 tour show at O2 Academy, Newcastle. This Saturday!
Just about recovered from Tribfest 2014 and what an amazing year it was! It always is! If you’re thinking of going back next year, keep your eye on the Tribfest website. Ed (the organiser) likes to throw out really cheap tickets early doors, to capture the crowd again very quickly for the next one. Thanks to everyone who wandered down to the main stage to catch our set. Much appreciated.
We had a great slot in the afternoon, on the main stage. It wasn’t practical for us to haul our video equipment across the field to get some footage of the band in action, but there are some mobile phone videos appearing on Facebook now. One such video has been posted on our Facebook Timeline for you to watch. Head over there to see it!
This Saturday. Genesis Party. Newcastle.
Next up is the O2 Academy in Newcastle, this Saturday. That’s Saturday 23rd August 2014. This will be our second visit to this venue and tickets sold very well last time, so if you’re thinking of coming down, book your tickets on the O2 Academy website.
In celebration of another successful show at Tribfest, we’ve got two more videos for you to watch. Both of these are taken from our recent show at Thornton Little Theatre. First up is No Son Of Mine:
Our Thornton show was used to audition a replacement for our departing bass player. You can read about our new bass player on his biog page. The show in Newcastle this coming weekend represents your last chance to see Dave Perry powering through a Genesis set list and we’ll be real sorry to see him go. If you’re coming to see the show though, maybe you’ll see the band performing their own version of Many Too Many / Musical Box? Here it is, as performed at Thornton Little Theatre:
So, leave us a comment below, share our page on Facebook & Twitter and don’t forget to book your tickets for Newcastle. You can buy them on the O2 Academy Newcastle website. See you there! 🙂
Mama, the UK’s all era Genesis tribute band interviews John W
Well so much has gone on in the past eleven months that we thought it was high time to drag another interview from John W. Here he discusses the change in venues that the band are currently appearing at and the complexities of putting on a Mama show and making a film!
Don’t forget, Saturday night (26th April) the band will be performing at the O2 Academy, Sheffield. You can buy tickets from the O2 Academy website. On with the interview….
Mama Website: Hi John!
John W: Hello there.
MW: So what’s been happening in the time since we last interviewed you?
JW: An awful lot (laughs)! I suppose the first thing to tell you about is the upcoming live DVD / Blu-ray Disc. As most folk know we put on a special free show for the fans who have supported us over the past two years as a sort of thank you to them all. We took the decision to make a DVD of the show and release it, as we keep getting asked at our gigs why we don’t have DVD’s or CD’s for sale.
MW: And why don’t you have DVD’s or CD’s for sale then?
JW: Good question. The main reason is that we wanted to ensure that the standard of playing was up to it and I know that we are now playing these songs better than ever. It is an obvious thing to say but the more you play together as a band the tighter and better you get. Also another thing was that we wanted the lights sorting out before we tried to film a show and thanks to Dave and Jules input, we now have a great light show.
MW: Yeah I remember you saying about that the last time we spoke. Was that a challenge then?
JW: You would have to ask Dave and Jules for that because they put all the work in. No seriously, Dave rigged all the lights, designed the way it would look and then programmed the scenes for each song into the computer. Jules then had to learn all about setting up lights at shows and how to work the computer at shows. Both of them have done superbly well in my opinion.

Genesis tribute band Mama would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year!
First things first, a very happy new year to all the Mama faithful out there! We all hope you had a great holiday season and are raring to get back into the swing of things. Yeah right. 🙂
Now that we have finished our holiday break we are back in the rehearsal room this weekend to start work on two Genesis masterpieces. One you already know about, namely the final sections of the so called Duke Suite which encompasses songs we already play; Behind The Lines / Duchess / Guide Vocal / Turn It On Again, and songs we don’t; Duke’s Travels / Duke’s End. John C has been working hard on getting the correct keyboard sounds (as always) and the rest of the band are learning their bits with a real passion. John W is of course just singing the same words as he does in Guide Vocal….
Guess The Song?
The second “new song” has been played before. Well a part of it has, but we have never attempted the whole ten minute epic. Want to guess what it is? Drop a comment in the comments section below.
The next shows are in Aylesbury and Liverpool respectively so an “away” game followed by a “home” game. The Aylesbury show is exciting for us as we have never played that part of the world before and we are hoping that people hear about us and come to see the show. The Liverpool show is at the world famous Cavern Club and already tickets are selling very well. We had over 200 in last time we played that venue and they are confident we will do even better this time around. Full details are in the “gigs” section here. Get your tickets for both of these shows early, to avoid disappointment!
DVD, Blu-ray & Festivals!
As you already know we shot around three and a half hours of footage for our forthcoming DVD / Blu-ray release at The Hub in Bacup, back in December. Work has already started to edit this and sync the soundboard recording of the night to the video footage shot. It’s too early to say when this will be available for sale yet but if you subscribe to our newsletter (on the right hand side) then not only will we be able to tell you about this, we will also be able to ensure you never miss a show when we are in your area. The newsletter is free and we promise not to spam you about buying sheets of double glazing etc (Webmaster: Is that something to do with helping to minimise the cold?).
2014 is shaping up to be an exciting year for us as we have two major tribute band festivals to play (Legends of Rock and Tribfest) as well as returning to some old haunts such as O2 Newcastle / St. Helens / Warrington and The Green Hotel in Kinross, Scotland. We have shows booked in London / Sheffield / Kettering / Rugby / Glasgow / Bury and Solihull. Again keep your eye on this website for full details.
Hope to see you at a Mama show in 2014 and remember we are only able to bring this music to you due to your support, so thanks for attending our shows and helping us celebrate the music of our favourite band.
Mama, the UK’s all era Genesis Tribute Band set for Blackburn show!
It’s that time of year again where we visit one of the top small theatres in the country to perform our show. If you’ve not been to Thwaites Empire before, you’re missing a trick! This venue is one of our favourites because it boasts great views of the band from every seat and great acoustics, so you can be sure of a night to remember, listening to your favourite Genesis tracks.
Here’s what John W had to say about our recent jaunt over to Yorkshire for Tribfest 2013!
We were very happy to be asked to appear at the 2012 Tribfest in the VIP tent (Marquee if you want to get all technical on us) and we must have made a good impression as a week later we were asked to appear on the main stage at this years event. The festival itself is billed as the largest tribute band festival in Europe and has been going a good number of years now. Most of the top UK tribute bands have appeared there at some time or another with quite a lot (Simple Minds and The Cure tributes leap to mind) from abroad. Tribfest is a three day festival with various stages and tents and has expanded into original bands and a DJ tent if the whole “tribute thing” doesn’t float your boat. View full article »
