The Return of Dave’s Tour Log!

Dave Jones (bass) at The Met in BuryAll the latest from Dave, our professor of bass!

Hurrah I hear you cry! It’s the return of the Mama Tour Log! Well there has been so much going on I (Dave) thought I would bring you up to date.

We started the year still searching for a replacement for James, on the face of it an impossible task – how do you replace someone who is irreplaceable? But we finally found our man and Tim Rothwell, former drummer with SeYeS, is the chosen one. Following that decision we started rehearsals to get Tim ready for his first concert which is going to be on 1st April – yes we have a sense of humour!

Meanwhile our 2017 ‘Tour’ kicked off with a return to one of our favourite venues, The Forum Theatre in Chester, which was sold out – a great start. Considering all five of us had not been together since November, we played some excellent stuff.

Next up we returned to The Cavern. This was a special show for the band because for John W, John C and James it was their 100th show as Mama. It was a great night with over 300 in the crowd and once again we played really well.

Rehearsals ongoing

Rehearsals with Tim continued and we played our third show at Oswestry, The Lion Quays. Another good show even though John W was struggling slightly with his voice. Yet again the feedback was very positive. View full article »

Mama to perform two unique shows at The Citadel in St. Helens, this coming weekend!

It’s been a busy few weeks, driving up and down motorways to perform shows in Kinross followed by Newcastle. Time for a local show we say! But, not just one local show. This time, we are bringing both our Genesis set and our hits set featuring the works of Collins, Gabriel, Mike & The Mechanics (and maybe a Hackett number), to St. Helens.

So, if you want tickets for either of these shows, grab them while they’re still on sale (because you can’t grab them when they’re no longer on sale can you?). Don’t wait until Monday. Monday is too late, mostly because the shows are on Friday and Saturday nights!

So, here’s everything you need:

Friday 7th October 2016 – Mama – Genesis set – The Citadel, St. Helens

Saturday 8th October 2016 – Mama – Collins, Gabriel, Mechanical Mike set – The Citadel, St. Helens

And with that little bit of news out there on the information superhighway, we’ve got a couple of videos to share with you. View full article »

Mama at Huntingdon HallGenesis tribute band Mama publishes two free downloads!

We have another website update for you today, again written by John W (because our webmaster is rather busy at the moment). Take it away JW….

Hi again Genesis fans! Hope you are all fit and well.

Since last our last website update we played two superb venues, namely Lion Quays in Oswestry and Huntington Hall in Worcester. The band enjoyed both shows but sadly I was recovering from a chest infection at Lion Quays so wasn’t on top form. The band had to ply me with iced water to get me through the shows. Just to clarify something while we on the subject of Lion Quays, ALL our two night shows at one venue will follow the following format:

  • Friday night will be the Genesis “Prog Rock” set which means two and a half hours of Genesis’s longer Prog songs.
  • Saturday night will be the “Hits” set which means two and a half hours of the hits of Genesis, Phil Collins, Mike And the Mechanics and Peter Gabriel.

The only exception to this in 2016 is our show at The Brindley in Runcorn where we have been requested for the “Hits” set.

Huntington Hall was a great venue and a first for us as it was an old church complete with pulpit, pews and a huge church organ. I resisted the temptation to sing Jesus He Knows Me from the pulpit however. We have been booked back for both venues for 2017.

Next shows

The next two shows are at The Waterside Arts Centre in Sale on 26th March and The Slade Rooms in Wolverhampton on 2nd April. The Waterside is half sold out already and we have a very special guest for the Slade Rooms show; The John Hackett Band!

Today we have a couple of new songs for you to hear. Well, when we write “new” we mean you may not heard us play them before (unless you came to one of the shows this year). Both of these audio recordings came from our mixing console at the Huntingdon Hall show. Dukes Travels & Dukes End (no we have not forgotten about the Duke Album) is first up:

Our new version of Los Endos with a little bit of Supper’s Ready cunningly glued on at the end is next:

Jules charity fundraising

In other news, our very own lighting extraordinaire Jules is still raising money for Cancer Research UK. As some of you may know, she normally has short hair and she thinks the worst thing she can possibly do with her hair isn’t shave it all off, but grow it long. Apparently, it looks most amusing when it’s grown long. So if you want to support a great cause (and keep tabs on her progress by way of funny pictures she posts), head over to her JustGiving page and make a donation. It doesn’t matter how large or how small your donation. It all goes to an amazing charity that is bent on ending the scourge that is Cancer, once and for all.

Hope to see you at a show soon!

Phil Collins Reissues Take A Look At Me NowCommences with the November 6th release of extended and remastered versions of Face Value and Both Sides

Phil Collins revisits a career that can boast over 100 million sales and numerous worldwide #1 albums with the new ‘Take A Look At Me Now’ retrospective reissue campaign in which all eight of his albums will be issued as extended and remastered editions. The campaign commences with the November 6th release of his 1981 debut album ‘Face Value’ and 1993’s ‘Both Sides’.

Entirely curated and compiled by Collins himself, his idea for the ‘Take A Look At Me Now’ concept is to examine how his songs have evolved over time, with the majority of the additional content throughout the series focused on live versions of the tracks. By contrasting the original studio versions of the material with later performances, the series demonstrates how Collins’ songs take on a life of their own once they’re freed from the confines of the studio.

The extended versions of the albums will also be completed with carefully selected demos and b-sides.

“I’ve always been quite proud of my demos and have often made them available as B-sides, but with a few exceptions, I have avoided including those on these collections,” says Collins. “Instead, I’ve focused on how nicely the songs developed when played on stage, rather than showing how they originated.”

Each album in the series will be remastered by Nick Davis, who earned a Grammy nomination for Best Surround Sound album for his work on the Genesis ‘1970-1975’ box set. Davis has also worked on all of the Genesis retrospective reissues.

Phil Collins Both SidesThe remaining six albums of Collins’ solo discography will follow in the coming months. They also feature a bold new artwork concept in which Collins’ has recreated his poses from the original album covers with new photography that was shot in the present day.

Initially released shortly after Collins’ 30th birthday, ‘Face Value’ was propelled to international multi-Platinum status with the help of the smash hit single ‘In The Air Tonight’. Other notable tracks on the album include the follow-up singles ‘I Missed Again’ and ‘If Leaving Me Is Easy’, as well as ‘Behind The Lines’ which was written with Collins’ Genesis colleagues Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford.

1993’s ‘Both Sides’ shares a similarly introspective atmosphere to ‘Face Value’, and features the Top 10 hit ‘Both Sides of the Story’ as well as further singles in the shape of ‘Everyday’ and ‘We Wait And We Wonder’.

The albums in the series will be available on a series of formats. The 2CD digipak and digital versions feature the remastered album and the additional content, and the 180 gram heavyweight audiophile vinyl format (single LP for ‘Face Value’ / double LP for ‘Both Sides’) features the remastered album as a stand-alone product. CD and vinyl box sets will also be available which compile both ‘Face Value’ and ‘Both Sides’ together with space to complete the collection as the rest of the series is released.

Further plans that will tie-in with the reissue series will be announced imminently.

NEXT SHOW: The Musician, Leicester!

Mama at The Musician, LeicesterMama, to perform An Evening of Genesis Music at The Musician, Leicester!

Hello…. Remember us?

Well after quite a long break from shows we are back with a bang at a new venue for us, namely The Musician in Leicester. Tickets have already gone really well for this show and according to the promoter we have the best advance sales for May. We will be playing the famous “Duke Suite” at this and indeed our next show after The Musician, which is at our old haunt The Theatre On The Steps in Bridgnorth. That venue has also reported great advance ticket sales which are up on last time and don’t forget we sold that venue out last year. Great to see such interest in keeping Genesis music alive by the tribute bands who perform it. We just need a team of Sherpa’s to help us up the dreaded 120 steps at Bridgnorth… Any offers?

Legends of Rock 2016

We had a great time at 2015 Legends Of Rock Festival back in March and are proud to announce that due to the reaction of the crowd there we have once again been invited back for 2016. More details as soon as we have them.

You can also watch this video on YouTube if you prefer.

Genesis, ex members, hits & other ditties

We have started work on another element of our show to hopefully delight Genesis fans, which means Mama are currently learning some of the ex-Genesis members solo hits such as In The Air Tonight, Sledgehammer, All I Need Is A Miracle, The Living Years, Big Time and many others to create a “Genesis hits” set. We will premier this set at our second night in Kinross after we play a totally “Prog Genesis” set the night before. We are also learning a brand new song for this as well as re-introducing a couple of songs we have stopped playing, so lots of rehearsals at this moment in time. Lets us know what “hits” you think we could incorporate in the comments section below or on our Facebook page.

The DVD & Live CD

We keep getting asked about the CD and DVD release we promised last year. Work is still ongoing. We basically want to get it right for when you hand over your hard earned cash for it which hopefully explains the delay. Watch this space!

Hope to see you at a Mama show soon. 🙂
