The Return of Dave’s Tour Log!

Dave Jones (bass) at The Met in BuryAll the latest from Dave, our professor of bass!

Hurrah I hear you cry! It’s the return of the Mama Tour Log! Well there has been so much going on I (Dave) thought I would bring you up to date.

We started the year still searching for a replacement for James, on the face of it an impossible task – how do you replace someone who is irreplaceable? But we finally found our man and Tim Rothwell, former drummer with SeYeS, is the chosen one. Following that decision we started rehearsals to get Tim ready for his first concert which is going to be on 1st April – yes we have a sense of humour!

Meanwhile our 2017 ‘Tour’ kicked off with a return to one of our favourite venues, The Forum Theatre in Chester, which was sold out – a great start. Considering all five of us had not been together since November, we played some excellent stuff.

Next up we returned to The Cavern. This was a special show for the band because for John W, John C and James it was their 100th show as Mama. It was a great night with over 300 in the crowd and once again we played really well.

Rehearsals ongoing

Rehearsals with Tim continued and we played our third show at Oswestry, The Lion Quays. Another good show even though John W was struggling slightly with his voice. Yet again the feedback was very positive. View full article »

Mama at Huntingdon HallToday, we are having our esteemed lead vocalist and expert on all things “chest infection” write us a website update!

Take it away JW….

Hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year! So what has been happening in Mama world lately?

Well the year started superbly with two sold out shows at The Forum Theatre in Chester and the Cavern Club in Liverpool. Both venues have already re-booked us for 2017 on the strength of this of course. We have been told by the chaps at The Cavern that we were the first tribute band ever to sell out the main backroom stage… and what a great night it was! The crowd sang every line and cheered till they were hoarse.

mama at Chester Forum TheatreWe also had a great time last weekend at The Lion Quays complex in Oswestry, though sadly I was suffering from the after effects of a chest infection. Again the audience helped us through and we will be returning in 2017. Thanks to David Mundell for his efforts to promote live music at this new venue and of course his other venue in Kinross.

The next show for the band is this Saturday at a haunt of a few Genesis tribute bands over the years, namely Huntington Hall in Worcester. This is a new venue for us and we hope to see a lot of folk there who have been requesting shows further South come and support us. Tickets are going well so please buy online to avoid missing out.

mama at Chester Forum Theatre

Sadly we had to cancel our appearance at the Legends of Rock festival on 12th March due to work commitments. The show after the next one is at Sale Waterside Arts Complex and again tickets are doing very well with nearly half the capacity sold.

We are currently in negotiations with a Dutch promoter for some shows in Holland in November this year, so more on that as soon as we have sorted the details out.

I’m currently listening to the re-mastered and expanded Phil Collins Face Value and Both Sides albums and loving them! The original songs seem much improved and the demo’s and extra live songs are a welcome addition for Phil fans. So if you’ve not bought it already, get out there and grab a copy.

mama at Chester Forum TheatreAs a side project myself, Mark and David have joined an original prog band called The Swan Chorus. We will be releasing an album later this year. A little taster by way of a demo will be on our Facebook page very soon and any good mixes we can get our hands on, we will no doubt showcase in the interval of our upcoming shows. So if you’re sat in your seat eating some ice cream and wondering what you’re listening to, it’s probably that!

Also we would like to announce that we have a very special guest for our show at The Slade Rooms on the 2nd April. The amazing John Hackett Band will open the show for us so we are all really thrilled to have him join us for this show. This will do very well and advance sales are good so again please book early!

Finally, if you’re not currently subscribed to our email newsletter, make sure you subscribe right now. You can put your email address and first name in the boxes in the top right hand corner of this web page and click Subscribe. Doing this allows us to inform you when we have shows in your area, so you don’t miss out on tickets. It also helps us to significantly reduce our advertising costs which in turn allows us to spend more money on our show.

Roll on Saturday 27th for Huntington Hall! Kind regards, JW.

NEXT SHOW: Brookside Theatre, Romford

Dave Mama Website BioAn evening of Genesis music with Mama, comes to The Brookside Theatre, Romford!

Hello all! It’s Sunday night which means we’ve just about recovered from our show at The Cavern this weekend. What a show it was! We broke records with a sellout crowd which along with our first show of 2015 in Chester the week before, gives us a great start to 2015. Thanks to everyone who came to see us at these shows. Spending your hard earned money on our show is really appreciated and we hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did!

So what’s next for Mama? Well, we will be visiting Essex. Specifically, on Saturday 21st February, we’ll be at The Brookside Theatre in Romford. This is a first visit to the venue for us, so we are hoping to capitalise on our recent numbers and pull a good crowd, so that we can visit again in 2016. If you’re in the area, tell us you already got your tickets?

Quiet Man Dave Speaks Out!

We thought he would quietly sit back and be content playing his bass but oh no, after Chester and Liverpool, he’s dying to have his say on our website! So without further ado, I’ll hand you over. This is bass man Jones, telling it his way:

An Evening of Genesis Music with MamaHello everyone!

It’s been almost six months since I joined the band and I have had such a fantastic time. From my first gig in Blackburn I have been knocked out by the reaction from the audience to our performances. This, combined with selling out our first two shows of 2015, shows that there is a huge desire out there for quality live music and there is no doubt that the music of Genesis is of the very highest quality.

I am often asked which is my favourite piece to play live? The honest answer is that it changes with every gig. From the Morse code-like bass line of Land of Confusion to the hypnotic riff of Carpet Crawlers, from the complex intricate patterns of In The Cage to the laid back groove of Misunderstanding – it’s all good stuff!

Other questions I have been asked include….

Why do you play the bass with your thumb? Over the years I have used a plectrum, I have used my fingers and more recently my thumb, like Sting who favoured that technique. I tend to vary the way I play depending on which Genesis song it is and how bad the blister is on my thumb!

Which strings do you use? Roundwound Rotosound longscale steel bass strings – worth every penny.

Four string or five string? I have a five string bass but tend not to use it. I can get all the sounds I need with the four string combined with the bass pedals. But I am on the lookout for a double neck!

Favourite bass players? Too many to list but any list would include Mike Rutherford (obviously!), Chris Squire, Paul McCartney, Geddy Lee, Jaco Pastorius, Scott LaFaro, Stanley Clarke, Carol Kaye, Geezer Butler and James Jamerson.

The band was ecstatic after our Cavern Club gig and now we are looking forward to a trip to The Brookside Theatre, Romford in Essex on Saturday, 21st February. A week later and we are in Bolton at the Roundhouse where we are hoping to introduce even more ‘new’ pieces into our set. If you have been to our Facebook page you will have seen mobile phone footage of our recent rehearsals so you’ll know which songs I am referring to!

Prefer to watch this video on YouTube? Go HERE.

We think our show is of great quality and if the feedback on our Facebook page is anything to go by, so do you! However to make it work, we have to sell as many tickets as possible. This means we need to spread the word as far and as fast as possible, to all Genesis and live music fans. Can I urge you to get in touch if you can help promote the band’s gigs?

I’m really looking forward to all our concerts in 2015 and if you come along to watch please have a word after the show. We enjoying discussing all things Genesis with you. We are fans of the music just as you are and our aim is to keep this music alive.

Best wishes
Dave – the new boy!

That just about wraps up our latest news. We’ve still got some more video to post from our Chester show. Just haven’t yet had chance to sift through it all to look for the best bits. Maybe tomorrow eh? In the meantime, head over to The Brookside Theatre website and grab your tickets for an evening of Genesis music on Saturday 21st February. We’ll do our very best to make it worth your while. 🙂

The Set List Doth Morph

In other news, we’ve been busy in the rehearsal room changing and adding to our set list for 2015 with some Genesis classics making a first appearance for us. If you follow us on Twitter (see the box to the right), you may have seen some photos we posted a couple of weeks ago from rehearsals and on our Facebook page, we may even have posted a couple of videos. Work has also restarted on the rest of the Duke Suite, which we hope to bring you very soon. The band have been working very hard on these ‘new’ songs and we really hope you like them when they get their 2015 airing.

The final show of 2014 is upon us. Thanks to all who came to The Met in Bury for making that a truly memorable night for the band. This weekend we are at The Trades in Rotherham. Roll on 2015!

Looking forward to 2015, it looks like a great year for Genesis fans with Mike & The Mechanics touring and now Steve Hackett has announced his 2015 tour. Full details of these tours can be found on the Mike & The Mechanics website along with the Steve Hackett website. For our part, 2014 has been a great year for the band and 2015 looks like being an even better one with return shows booked at The Citadel (St. Helens), The Met (Bury), Theatre On The Steps (Bridgnorth), The Cavern (Liverpool) and many more venues. Also we are spreading our wings with some shows in Essex, Sussex, Scotland and a new Newcastle venture. We have some new Genesis songs in the pipeline which we know you are going to love so keep an eye on the site. A live CD and our long awaited DVD / Blu-ray Disc will be released next year too.

Delving into the video archive, here’s Mama performing Duchess at Thornton Little Theatre, 2014:

New guitarist? Old guitarist?

Some news we can announce is that Mark has decided he loves playing Genesis music so much he is unable to tear himself away from the band so he will be staying with us for 2015. We are thrilled at this news.

We know that the reason you guys enjoy what we do is that you are Genesis fans first and foremost and that always helps when the hours are long and we get home at 4:00am after a show. We are fans playing for fans and the response you all give us, not just by coming to the shows but by the many messages on our Facebook page and support in Genesis forums makes it all worth while. Thanks to you guys for allowing us to continue.

A very Perry thank you!

Last but not least we wanted to say another thank you to our ex-bassist Dave Perry for all that he did for us during his time with the band. Thanks matey!

Happy Christmas and all the very best for 2015 from all of us here at Mama HQ!
